The early 17th century was a period of significant turbulence across Eastern Europe, characterized by power struggles within and between emerging states. Poland-Lithuania, a major power in the region, found itself entangled in the political chaos of its neighbor, Muscovy. The Muscovite "Time of Troubles" (Смутное время), which began in the late 16th century, saw the weakening of the Russian Tsardom due to dynastic crises, social upheaval, and foreign invasions. This period presented an opportunity for Poland to extend its influence over Muscovy, culminating in the occupation of Moscow in 1610.
